Short Description of Position:

As a member of the Young Diplomats board you have the responsibility of attending all the board meetings to represent the youth of Young Diplomats. Along with two other Youth Directors you will participate in decisions regarding YD’s mission, purpose, financial practices, organizational management, accountability and public image.

Qualifications:

• Between the ages of 18 and 24 during the term of service (April 1, 2011- March 31, 2012)
• A high school graduate; or enrolled in high school by April 1, 2011
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint

Things to think about…

Hours per week or days per week:

• Up to 1 hour a week responding to emails as needed
• Up to 3 hours a week attending regular YD programming
• Up to 2 days a month attending meetings; more days may be required in peak period months

Considerations:

This position requires you to take on a strategic leadership role by contributing to the strategic planning session. Besides assisting the session facilitator, you will also be called on to make recommendations regarding projects, programs and special events on behalf of the youth of YD.

You must genuinely enjoy working with youth and representing their interests in a formal, professional environment. You are expected to converse with parents and professionals in the community, explaining what YD is about and the program we run. You will be an ambassador for Young Diplomats so you must present yourself in an appropriate manner.

This year, the camp theme is “Choices”. Sometimes as youth it is easy to think that we have little power over what we do or where we are heading in life. Our goal this year at camp is to challenge this and to help you realize that your life is full of choices. Where are you at now? What choices have you made to get you here – good or bad? What choices do you wish you had? What resources do you have available to you? These are all questions we will explore together at camp.

ARE YOU COMING TO CAMP 2010?

Thank you to everyone who applied to YD’s SLCamp. If you have been accepted to camp you have been notified with  a personal phone call to you and your parents and an email. Here are some important last details:

1. YD Canoeing Consent form: Print and fill out the YD Canoeing Consent form with your parent’s signature (if you are 18+ this does not pertain to you. Bring the form with you Monday Aug, 2nd to Oakridge Community Center and submit it to Eden Zeweldi (Camp Coordinator) or Aden Abebe (Programs Manager).

2. Parents Camp Info Night: Saturday. July 31 at East Metro Youth Services, 1200 Markham Road, 3rd floor (NORTH WEST corner of Markham and Ellesmere) starting at 3pm.

3. Things you should pack: This year youth are allowed to pack snacks. We ask for snacks to be packed in containers as not produce a mass of waste while in the wilderness. Please pack bug spray, we have been warned the camp has many bugs this year.

4. WHERE TO MEET US: Monday Aug, 2nd we will be meeting at Oakridge Community Center, 63 Pharmacy Ave, between Pharmacy and Danforth at 11am. We advise that youth come with a packed lunch or having already eaten because we start camp programming immediately after arrival (no lunch included Monday).

Hey YD!

As most of you know, YD’s Annual Summer Leadership Camp is soon approaching and so are the deadlines. This year promises to be a blast and we are all excited to get to Muskoka and do what we know how to do best – have a ton of fun!

We wanted to make all the application and deadline information clearer so you will find a summary of everything you need to know to take part in the most exciting event of the summer. WE STILL HAVE SPACES AVAILABLE…BUT YOU NEED TO APPLY!

DEADLINES:

• AUGUST 1st: All applications must be in. This includes your permission form, Muskoka form, and answer to the YD Question
• AUGUST 14th: This is when you will hear from us about whether or not we can take you to camp this year.
• AUGUST 22nd: Parent’s Information Day. On this day all parents of youth going to camp will be invited to YD’s office to get information about camp and get any questions answered. More info on this to come.
• AUGUST 30th – SEPTEMBER 2nd: CAMP!!

SUBMITTING APPLICATION:

• EMAIL: If you can scan your permission forms and if your application is written then you can email your entire application to: camp09@youngdiplomats.org
• FAX: We apologize for all of the complications regarding the fax machine. Applications can be faxed to: 416-644-0116
• DROP OFF: If you do not have access to a scanner or fax machine, or need to submit something that is not written then you can bring it to YD’s Tutoring Location @ 3040 Danforth Ave. on August 1st from 1:00pm-3:00pm or email us to arrange a personal drop off.

COMPLETING APPLICATION:

• We wanted to make this year’s application more fun so we asked you what you would do if you were a YD staff. Tell us however you want to.
• We are happy to accept your answer in written format but if you are not comfortable with writing your answer then you can choose any other format.
